Read full description of the books:
There is a land where illness, ugliness and bad luck are punishable crimes, whereas thieves and murderers receive compassionate medical attention; where boys are taught the impractical in a College of Unreason; where unusuable wealth is stored in Musical Banks, and perhaps the most unfortunate of all--the tedious--are sent to a Hospital for Incurable Bores!
The land is Erewhon, an anagram of Nowhere and the scene of a remarkable satire by Samuel Butler. Erewhon begins as an adventure story. A young sheep farmer strikes out across unexplored mountains in a colony much like New Zealand. The way is hard, the suspense gripping. He is then captured by the Erewhonians--and we are suddenly in an equally adventurous world of ideas, where absurd and hypocritical institutions resembling those of Butler's own Victorian Age are sujected to his magnificent scorn.
Yet readers will find Erewhon a most original work, one that transcends its times and prophesies a world somewhat like today's. Indeed, in its challenge to much modern liberal thought, it is perhaps even more stimulating than ever before.
